Don’t Waste Your Time!

This seems like a great concept. The application is clean and easy to use and the materials are spot on. However, the company uses a “free MBA” as a lure to engage with mid-career professionals and then pushes them into a Executive MBA “profile” that comes with a “tuition”. Smartly is trying to sell themselves as a disruptor to Higher Education - however, they are making money on the placement of prospects on the backend while charging a tuition on the front-end. That’s all fine and we’ll as long as that is what they promote. Instead it’s promoted as a “free MBA” which highly encourages you to go through all of the models which takes hours of work - to then push you into a program with a tuition attached. This is the ultimate bate and switch - praying on individuals looking for advancement or employment opportunity while profiting on both ends of the transaction through deception tactics. This is a well designed app that is inherently flawed by deceptive marketing tactics and misleading agenda. I’d advise that you don’t let this app “disrupt” the 3 plus hours that I lost working through its modules only to be lead to an omitted tuition. Just be honest Smartly.

Smartly is an innovative MBA program and model. You can learn from your computer or mobile phone, any time and anywhere. The career network is strong. The curriculum is solid- offers classes in Accounting, Venture Capital, and Entrepreneurship. Coming from a tech background, this knowledge has been invaluable - it provides me with a unique lens to evaluate any business. I highly recommend this as an option to folks who want something more flexible, those who are on an entrepreneurial path, and especially if you do not want to get into a 6-figure debt if you go for traditional MBA degrees.
Great content, tiny fonts

As someone with no disposable income and an obsolete education, I depend on free, quality learning materials. If I learn enough, maybe I can rejoin the workforce, so I have a lot at stake. Smartly provides concise, usable content in bite-sized chunks that I can digest at my own pace. Practical examples and frequent interaction minimize boredom. The app promises a certificate, further courses for a free MBA, and a social media platform that employers use for recruiting. It sounds too good to be true! Employers sponsoring the courses ensures that the material covers material that actually leads to jobs. I could not determine whether employers recognize the “MBA” or whether the app falls under any accreditation system. If I put it on my resume, will it look like I got it from a diploma mill? Unfortunately, the app is not friendly to aging eyes. Even with my strongest readers, the text font is small; and in tables, even smaller, so they are unreadable without a magnifying glass. This is unnecessary when there’s a surplus of white space. I expect problems will be worked out over time and sincerely hope Smartly succeeds. I recommend it. Just have your magnifying glass handy.
Truly Innovative Online Education

Smartly’s free MBA still seems to be in the trial zone—it’s unclear if it can sustain itself and garner respect from potential employers beyond its crowd of funders. Their truly great idea is innovative online education. Rather than mimicking an increasingly useless lecture based format that doesn’t guarantee any sort of engagement or retention, they’ve developed a challenging but engaging way to convey information on a variety of complex topics. I’m new to business, but not academics. Having recently completed a conversationally based master’s degree in the liberal arts focused on the ancient model of Socratic education, I see this as the other piece of the puzzle per useful education of the future. For a facts and figures based degree (as opposed to the creative thinking inherent in the liberal arts which will always demand in-person interaction) Smartly’s platform is the way to go. I’m excited to see if they expand their degree offerings on their unique platform.
